Hello, fellow gluten-free adventurers!
If you’re just starting out on your gluten-free journey, first of all – welcome to the club! It might seem a bit daunting at first, but I promise you, with the right tools in your kitchen, you’ll be whipping up delicious gluten-free meals in no time.
When I first went gluten-free, I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the kitchen gadgets and gizmos out there. So, I’ve put together this starter kit list of essential items to help you set up your gluten-free kitchen without breaking the bank or cluttering your worktops. Let’s dive in!
1. Preparation Tools
- Cutting board (dedicated gluten-free): This is crucial to prevent cross-contamination. I’d recommend getting a distinctive one – maybe a funky colour or pattern – so it’s easy to spot your ‘safe’ board.
- Chef’s knife: A good chef’s knife will be your best friend in the kitchen. It’s perfect for chopping veggies, meat, and even those tricky gluten-free breads!
- Measuring cups and spoons: Accurate measurements are key in gluten-free baking, trust me on this one!
2. Cooking Vessels
- Non-stick frying pan: Great for everything from scrambled eggs to stir-fries.
- Medium-sized saucepan: Perfect for cooking gluten-free pasta or making sauces.
- Baking sheet: Essential for roasting vegetables or baking gluten-free cookies.
3. Baking Equipment
- Mixing bowls: Get a set of various sizes. You’ll use these for everything from mixing cake batters to tossing salads.
- Whisk: Crucial for blending gluten-free flour mixes and making lump-free batters.
- Silicone spatula: Great for scraping every last bit of that precious gluten-free batter out of the bowl!
4. Utensils
- Wooden spoons (dedicated gluten-free): Wooden utensils can harbour gluten, so it’s best to have a separate set for your gluten-free cooking.
- Tongs: Incredibly versatile – use them for flipping meat, tossing salads, or serving pasta.
- Can opener: You’ll be surprised how many naturally gluten-free foods come in cans!

5. Storage and Organisation
- Airtight containers: These are essential for storing your gluten-free flours and preventing them from going rancid.
- Labels and a marker: Trust me, you’ll want to label everything to prevent any gluten mix-ups!
6. Cleaning Tools
- Sponges (separate for gluten-free items): Again, this helps prevent cross-contamination. I use a different coloured sponge for my gluten-free dishes.
- Tea towels (designated for gluten-free use): Keep these separate from your regular tea towels.
7. Speciality Items
- Toaster bags: These are brilliant if you’re sharing a kitchen with gluten-eaters. Pop your gluten-free bread in these bags before toasting to prevent contamination.
- Flour sifter: This helps to aerate your gluten-free flour blends, resulting in lighter baked goods.
Remember, you don’t need to buy everything at once. Start with the basics and build your collection as you go along. The most important thing is to keep your gluten-free tools separate to prevent cross-contamination.
As you become more comfortable with gluten-free cooking and baking, you might want to invest in some fancier equipment (hello, stand mixer!), but these essentials will get you off to a great start.

Happy cooking, and welcome to the gloriously gluten-free life!
Best,
